Washington, D.C. – The Trump Administration today announced new grant funding of $700 million to support 13 existing coal plants via the Department of War under Section 303 of the Defense Production Act and the development of two new coal units under Department of Energy authorities. The grants, which are in support of the administration’s April 20 presidential determination finding coal supply chains and baseload power generation capacity essential to national defense, reflects the administration’s continued commitment to coal as part of a reliable, affordable energy mix. In response, America’s Power President and CEO Michelle Bloodworth released the following statement:
“Today’s announcement reflects the Trump administration’s recognition that coal is a critical part of America’s energy security. Coal plants provide around-the-clock baseload power with on-site fuel storage, giving military installations and critical industries a level of resilience that is difficult to replicate. As electricity demand grows from data centers, artificial intelligence, and electrification, maintaining that foundation matters more than ever.
“The United States has approximately 400 years of domestic coal reserves, making it one of the most fuel-secure energy sources available. This investment, which also benefits the 42 coal mines that supply these plants, helps put our coal reserves to work for national defense while reducing exposure to the supply chain risks that can affect other energy sources.
“America’s Power appreciates the Trump administration’s ongoing support for coal. From the National Energy Emergency declaration and executive action directing power purchase agreements for coal plants at military installations, to regulatory relief for coal-fired generators and reestablishment of the National Coal Council, this administration has taken meaningful steps to support coal-based electricity and the reliable power it provides for our country. Today’s announcement continues that record.”
