The Vital Importance of Coal and America’s Electricity Future

This summer, America’s Power produced a new video series discussing the importance of coal, the workers who produce it, and the power plants that turn it into dependable electricity for millions of Americans. With all three videos now released, the series provides a firsthand look at the coal supply chain and its vital importance to our country’s energy future. The series features Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Laura Swett and Commissioner Lindsay See, West Virginia Public Service Commission Chairman Charlotte Lane, and the team at Alliance Resource Partners’ Tunnel Ridge Mine, including General Manager Eric Anderson. Their perspectives highlight the work, expertise, and commitment behind a resource that continues to support a reliable, affordable, and fuel-secure electric grid.

“American Coal: From the Mine to the Grid” follows a visit hosted by Alliance Resource Partners and American Electric Power (AEP), beginning underground at Tunnel Ridge Mine and continuing to AEP’s John E. Amos Power Plant. The visit gave federal energy regulators an opportunity to see the coal supply chain in operation and meet the men and women whose work keeps it running. Their observations reinforce the importance of dispatchable generation, fuel that can be stored on site, and the existing power plants that serve our country day and night.

“Coal: Our Nation’s Most Reliable Fuel Source” builds on those themes by connecting the work at Tunnel Ridge with the needs of electricity consumers. The video highlights coal’s longstanding contribution to West Virginia’s economy and its continued importance as electricity demand grows. It also emphasizes the value of coal generation during severe winter weather, when dependable power is essential to protecting lives and keeping communities functioning.

“The Workers Behind Reliable Coal Power” brings that story directly to the workforce. Anderson describes the pride that comes from producing coal to support America’s growing energy needs and the importance of an all-of-the-above energy policy. His perspective is a reminder that preserving dependable generation also means supporting the people, skills, and infrastructure required to supply it.

Together, these videos illustrate why the work being done under the Trump administration to support coal production and coal-fired generation matters. The administration has made coal part of its energy dominance agenda, directing federal agencies to address barriers to coal investment and recognize its role in meeting growing electricity demand. The series gives Americans a firsthand view of the workers and facilities at the center of those priorities.

The implications for coal’s future are clear. Coal’s ability to provide power when needed, maintain fuel supplies on site, and support the grid during periods of high demand makes the existing fleet a critical part of our national energy strategy. Policies affecting its future must recognize those contributions and the supply chain that makes them possible.

America’s Power is grateful to Chairman Swett, Commissioner See, Chairman Lane, Eric Anderson, and all the workers and participants who shared their time and perspectives. We also thank Alliance Resource Partners and AEP for hosting the visit and making this firsthand look possible. Thanks to the participants’ comments and willingness to share their experiences, millions of Americans are now learning more about coal’s role in their daily lives and the people who help keep their lights on.
