America’s Power Statement on Louisiana Rolling Blackouts

Washington, D.C. – On Sunday, MISO implemented rolling blackouts in Louisiana which impacted approximately 100,000 customers over a four-hour period.  America’s Power issued the following statement by Michelle Bloodworth, President and CEO:

“Sunday’s electricity shortage in Louisiana demonstrates the vulnerability of our nation’s electricity supply and the urgent need to maintain, rather than retire, existing power plants, especially coal power plants, which are at risk of being shut down prematurely due to harmful regulations imposed by previous administrations and misguided federal policies. Unfortunately, almost one-third of MISO’s coal fleet has announced plans to retire over the next five years.

“Rolling blackouts are likely to happen more frequently unless steps are taken immediately to prevent more coal retirements.  Thankfully, President Trump and his administration are actively working to strengthen our nation’s electricity supply by valuing coal for its affordability and dependability.”
