Washington, D.C. – America’s Power President and CEO Michelle Bloodworth issued the following statement in response to today’s Senate hearing on grid reliability and resiliency:
“We commend the Senate Energy Committee for holding today’s hearing on grid reliability and resiliency. Consumers should be relieved that electric grid reliability is finally receiving the attention it deserves, especially considering the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) agenda to shut down fossil fuels which produce 60 percent of the nation’s electricity. Utilities have already announced plans to retire almost 81,000 MW of coal-fired generation between now and 2030. The concerns expressed by energy regulators and grid operators about premature coal plant retirements and the lack of replacement generation can no longer be ignored. Policymakers have been warned that a reliability crisis is imminent unless the pace of the energy transition is gradual and EPA regulations avoid causing reliability problems.”
